How to Prevent Seasonal Allergies Naturally

Many people are dealing with seasonal allergies this time of year. If you are one of those people, this post is for you!

I used to be one of those people.  I’m a total nature lover, but once spring came around, I was hit with sneezing, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes and other unpleasant symptoms of seasonal allergies.  Thankfully, I don’t have any allergies to deal with anymore.

That’s because I’m really vigilant about strengthening my immune and detoxification systems before allergy season hits — which is key for getting to the root of seasonal allergies. This post is to share what I do to stay strong and healthy so allergies don’t stand a chance in my body.

Why we get seasonal allergies

Seasonal allergies are an immune and inflammatory response to irritants in the environment. From many holistic points of view, these allergies happen because of weakened immune and detoxification function. A strong immune and detoxification system is the answer to prevent seasonal allergies naturally.

The body has a threshold for toxins, allergens, chemicals, emotional stress and other irritants.  When that total load is exceeded, you start to experience allergy symptoms (or other symptoms of illness and disease). The body literally gets overloaded and has trouble keeping up.

The environment is filled with excess irritants during spring like pollen, grasses, etc. so it makes sense that our body can get a bit overloaded if our systems aren’t quite running optimally.

Thankfully, there are many things we can do to give our body the necessary support it needs that will help strengthen our immune and detoxification function.

Natural Remedies to Prevent Seasonal Allergies

Interestingly, nature provides everything we need at the exact time our body needs it. Over the years, I fell in love with foraging and learning about wild plants. It never ceases to amaze me that God freely gives us everything we need, right under our feet in nature, to keep our body healthy and running optimally. How amazing is that?!

During early spring, it’s not a coincidence that the first wild plants that start to show are ones that specifically strengthen the immune system and clear the detoxification pathways. Nature knows exactly what our body needs and freely provides it!

Spring wild plants like chickweed, nettles, purple dead nettle, dandelion, clovers and cleavers are abundant in spring and can be found literally everywhere…I’ve even seen them growing in the cracks of the sidewalk in urban areas. There is free food and medicine right under our feet, all the time!

Seasonal Allergy Prevention and Relief Tea

HERE is the link to my favorite tea that contains some of the best herbs and plants that prevent and relieve allergy symptoms.  Drink at least 3 cups a day a few weeks before and during allergy season. Many people, including myself, have been very successful preventing allergies with this tea. I fill up a big stainless steel bottle and sip on it throughout the day. Add in 1-3 teaspoons of honey for added sweetness and also medicinal, immune boosting benefits!

Other Natural Seasonal Allergy Prevention

Nettle leaf in all forms – fresh, dried and tincture

Nettle leaf is extremely effective at preventing allergies and reducing the symptoms of seasonal allergies. Drink at least 3 cups of fresh or dried nettle leaf tea a few weeks before and during active allergy season for best results. If you don’t prefer tea, nettle capsules are very effective, too.  THIS one, with added quercetin and freeze dried organic nettle, is recommended by many holistic health practitioners for natural seasonal allergy prevention.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar boosts the immune system, helps break up mucus and supports lymphatic drainage (the lymphatic system is a major detox pathway). THIS is my favorite way to consume apple cider vinegar.  Just be sure to get the apple cider vinegar with “the mother.” I take 1 tablespoon a day when the seasons change and it’s made such a big difference in my health in numerous ways!

Air filter / air purifier

Having a high quality air purifier in your home removes allergens and molds that cause seasonal allergy symptoms and will significantly lessen your total toxic load. Since most of us spend a significant amount of time inside, a high quality air purifier is a must.

THIS air purifier is specifically designed for those with asthma and allergy issues. It’s a hospital grade purifier with technology used in the military. These air purifiers are so effective that they were chosen by the Red Cross and FEMA to address the air quality concerns in post 9/11 New York.  It’s the one I have in my house and the one I highly recommend.

Yes, it’s a bit pricey, but in my experience, it doesn’t compare whatsoever to other air purifiers. It’s truly been worth every penny. (I am not affiliated with this company in any way. I just personally use it and think it’s the best out there). Here is the link if interested.

Local, raw honey from your area

Make sure it’s unfiltered so it still contains the pollen. Ideally, the honey would come from as close to your location as possible. You can often find raw honey at your local farmer’s market. Raw honey boosts the immune system and helps respiratory issues. 1 teaspoon a day is all that’s needed. It’s a delicious medicine and if you add it to your allergy tea, you can do double duty 🙂

Reducing stress

Anything you can do to reduce emotional stress will go a long way to lessen your total toxic threshold. Whatever that looks like for you (walks, yoga, meditation, exercise, art, music, etc.) make it happen!

So much great info here Kelly…thank you! I’m really fortunate that seasonal allergies have never been a problem for me. Maybe that’s because I’ve always cycled ACV in and out. Don’t use it all the time but it’s definitely a part of my life.
