Infrared Sauna Benefits Wow!

Infrared Sauna Health Benefits & My Experience

I purchased my very own infrared sauna! They were on my radar for years and I’m so thrilled to finally own one. I can’t wait to tell you about some of the many health benefits and my results from regularly using an infrared sauna.  The top hospitals, holistic doctors, cancer and weight loss centers around the world – even NASA –  have been using and raving about the benefits of infrared saunas. And for very good reasons that you’ll learn about below.

Warning – this is a really, really long post! I’ve spent countless hours researching infrared saunas and comparing companies before deciding on one that I really love and believe in. If you don’t care about all the science or the details of my own experience and just want to see what eco-friendly, low-EMF infrared sauna I decided to go with, click HERE and mention that you saw this post on Primally Inspired. (This is NOT a sponsored post) *Update: We are doing a Group Buy so we can get wholesale pricing!!! I had my very first infrared sauna experience when I was living in Maryland about 5 years ago. I was involved in a car accident 10 years ago that left me with chronic, nagging, neck pain. In those 10 years, I tried just about everything I could think of to end the chronic pain – physical therapy, acupuncture, yoga, massage therapy, nutrition and herbal treatments, hydrotherapy, chiropractic care, and a lot more. And while most of those therapies did provide pain relief, the pain would always return just a few weeks later.

And then I visited a chiropractor in Maryland who was a firm believer in infrared saunas for chronic pain, inflammation, weight loss and detoxification. After my first session I was hooked. Just three sessions a week for three months and my chronic neck pain was finally gone….and didn’t return…..until just last winter when I re-injured my neck in a sledding accident. At least I knew exactly what to do for my neck injury this time around! By this time I had moved to Pennsylvania so I googled infrared sauna therapy in my area. Much to my dismay, the closest thing that came up was over an hour away, which was unrealistic for me to do at the time.

That’s when I made the decision to spend some time researching infrared saunas because I was interested in possibly purchasing my own. After months and countless hours of research, I finally picked a company who exceeded every one of my expectations and I bought my own infrared sauna (plus I learned a whole lot about infrared saunas in the process – way more than anyone ever needs to know haha!).

By the way, this post is NOT sponsored nor was I given a sauna for my review. I’m just head over heels in love with my sauna and want everyone to know about all the benefits of infrared sauna therapy because I believe it can make a considerable difference in your health just like my family and I have experienced. Once I collected the overwhelming evidence for infrared sauna therapy, I truly believe that it is one of the best healing tools available.

The benefits of regular infrared sauna sessions range from weight loss to detoxing harmful chemicals to cancer and disease prevention/treatment to relieving eczema and psoriasis, arthritis and so much more. I firmly believe that every heart disease, thyroid, weight loss, cancer, diabetic, chronic pain, autistic or autoimmune disease patient should have access to regular infrared sauna sessions.

And months after owning my infrared sauna, I can say without a doubt that regular infrared sauna therapy was the best investment I’ve made for my health and the health of my family. It moved the mark on our health the fastest and most noticeable, more than anything we’ve done prior. I can’t wait to tell you about the benefits we’ve received from infrared sauna therapy – some that really surprised us! Infrared Sauna Benefits Wow!

What is an Infrared Sauna?

An infrared sauna is a special type of sauna that basically uses light to create heat. You might also hear them called far-infrared because far describes where the infrared waves fall on the light spectrum. It’s on the same wavelength of light that gives life to the entire plant kingdom! Far infrared rays are the most vital to health and healing. Far infrared rays also stimulate endorphins (the happy brain hormones!), kill bad bacteria and parasites and most importantly, penetrate into the body to detoxify cells.

Far infrared is also the same type of heat produced by the sun, but without any of the negative effects of solar radiation. It’s like being in a your own box of healing sunshine without all the harmful radiation! In fact, there’s evidence that this type of light is actually the antidote to excess ultraviolet and EMF radiation. It’s even been shown to heal sun damaged skin, including wrinkles and fine lines!

Whole body infrared therapy has been used for over 80 years by German physicians. In 1965 it was used exclusively by medical practitioners in Japan until being released for public use  in 1979.

Infrared therapy has been studied extensively for decades and no adverse effects have ever been reported (source). The American Journal of Medicine conducted a meta-review of all the studies on sauna use from 1966 to the present and concluded that infrared sauna use is safe and has therapeutic value for healthy people as well as heart disease patients. They are even safe for kids, pets and pregnant women. Hospitals have been using infrared heat for decades for premature newborns. NASA even uses infrared heat to maintain cardiovascular conditioning in astronauts during long space flights! The majority of top hospitals, cancer facilities and holistic doctors around the world use and recommend whole body infrared therapy for healing and disease prevention.

Hundreds of studies and clinical trials can be found reporting impressive improvements in:

  • arthritis
  • sleep disorders
  • mood disorders
  • thyroid disorders
  • acne
  • obesity
  • autism
  • cancer
  • cellulite
  • heart disease
  • radiation related illnesses
  • Chron’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis & fibromyalgia
  • scars & wound healing
  • strokes
  • menopause
  • depression
  • asthma
  • eczema and psoriasis
  • colds, the flu
  • and more!

Dr. Imamura in Japan put 25 men with heart disease in an infrared sauna 15 minutes a day for two weeks. The results were: significantly lowered blood pressure, significant weight loss, significantly lowered blood sugar, significantly increased blood flow, lowered cholesterol, and lowered triglycerides! These results were published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in 2001.

Infrared Sauna Compared to a Regular Sauna

While researching, I learned that there are healing benefits no matter what type of sauna you use. All types of saunas will make you sweat and doing so helps flush out toxins. The skin is a major detox organ, but the truth is, many of us don’t sweat nearly enough these days. We sit in air conditioned rooms all day and night. And if we do workout, most of us workout in an air conditioned environment where it’s really hard to work up a good sweat. Sweating in any type of sauna (or any situation!) is a good and welcome practice to release toxins via the skin.

However, the benefits of infrared saunas go much deeper and are much safer than a conventional sauna. The type of heat in an infrared sauna penetrates the skin deeply (1.5” to 6”!!!) aiding in many restorative body processes that are not available through a conventional sauna. Because infrared heat penetrates the skin so deeply and heats the body from the inside out rather than just heating the skin superficially like a conventional sauna, the infrared sauna is able to eliminate toxins and speed oxygen flow deep into the muscles, joints and internal organs. It’s able to remove impurities from cells, specifically the cells inside fat where the body stores waste and harmful toxins such as heavy metals, dozens of pesticides, cleaning agents, endocrine disrupting hormones, alcohol, and nicotine. Also because infrared energy travels so deep into the body, it’s able to regenerate damaged tissues and strengthen immune cells while weakening and killing viruses, pathogens and harmful bacteria.

The far infrared sauna is the only type of sauna proven safe for the elderly and for severe end-stage heart patients because the temperatures are much lower than a conventional sauna (the temperature is much lower and much more pleasant in the far infrared sauna, but you will sweat 2-3 times the volume of a conventional sauna!).  I found a fascinating study from the Mayo Clinic that reported the far infrared sauna was the only thing that was able to improve late-stage heart failure patients with zero side effects when nothing else could be done by medicine. And the improvement took place in just 3 short weeks!

Bottom line: The sweating is deeper, more profuse and will enable your body to excrete a higher percentage of toxins through an infrared sauna. An infrared sauna also aids in many healing processes not available through a conventional sauna. Although all types of saunas can be beneficial, if you have the choice, a low-EMF infrared sauna is the way to go. (HERE’S the company I picked. Summary of benefits we’ve noticed from infrared therapy:

  • My husband and I are both sleeping deeper.
  • I’ve noticed healthier, thicker hair and my hair is growing like a weed (from the increased circulation).
  • Leaves my skin feeling like I got the best facial ever – my skin is baby soft!
  • Reduction in my fine lines and cellulite.
  • Eliminated my chronic neck pain!!! For those living with chronic pain, you can understand why I’m so excited about that!
  • Faster recovery time from working out.
  • Super fast recovery on my husband’s injured shoulder (3 days versus his usual 2+ weeks).
  • Makes me more mentally relaxed, while making my husband feel more energetic and rejuvenated (it seems to balance us because I tend to be high strung and he’s usually very low key).
  • Cleared my husband’s back acne.
  • Seems to be helping with my typical “winter blues” so far. I haven’t felt them yet this winter – woo!
  • I accidentally ingested some dairy which resulted in a horrible headache. After my sauna session, it was completely gone.
  • My scars are almost completely faded!
  • I can attest to the cardio benefits. I recently ran a 5K with my runner friend (I am so NOT a runner) and it was a piece of cake. I kept up with her even though I can’t even remember the last time I ran before that. We both couldn’t believe it!
  • I finally broke through my flexibility plateau (this is a big deal to me – I’ve been working on my splits for the last year and was stuck in this one spot for months).
  • My husband and I haven’t been sick at all, not even a hint of sickness, even though we were around numerous people who were sick with colds and the flu (I even accidentally drank after someone who was sick!)

My mom recently bought an infrared sauna from the same company, too so I’ll keep you posted on their results after a few months! It’s exciting to see how much it’s helped us so far!

I think it’s so cool how in a single sauna session, I can get a facial, burn fat and calories, get cardio exercise, kill off bad bacteria, viruses and pathogens, relax and restore, spend time praying, boost my metabolism, strengthen my immune system, prevent cancer and disease, increase flexibility, relieve pain, detoxify from harmful chemicals,  all at the same time!!! Talk about getting the most bang with your buck! It was truly the best investment I’ve made for my health.

Infrared Sauna Results and Health Benefits! Wow!

Infrared Sauna for Helping & Preventing Cancer and Disease

An infrared sauna session will raise your core body temperature. When the core body temperature is raised, it’s the body’s natural healing mechanism to strengthen and accelerate the immune response as well as burn off viruses and bad bacteria as evident in the case of a fever and infection. This enhanced immune system, combined with improved elimination of toxins and wastes via profuse sweating, increases your overall health and resistance to disease.

Infrared saunas are showing great promise in helping cancer patients and almost all top cancer facilities and holistic doctors around the world are now using them as part of their cancer treatment and prevention. At 109 degrees, cancer cells die. In repeated infrared sauna treatments, resistance of cancer cells become weaker while immune function gets stronger as tumor cells die away.

It’s calculated that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women who are alive today will face cancer in their lifetime. This world is so sick. The soil is sick, the trees are dying, the water is contaminated, we’ve got over 4 billion pounds of chemicals, including 72 million pounds of known carcinogens released into the nation each year. If we want to stay healthy in today’s world, we’ve got to help our body get the toxins out and keep the body’s healing mechanisms strong. Through my research I learned that an infrared sauna is the very best way to detox toxins and strengthen the body’s healing mechanisms.

Getting personal for a second — all my cancer prevention research was a major influencer in my decision to ultimately purchase an infrared sauna. When I was 24 years old, I watched my strong, athletic, fit dad, who was only 46, die a painful and horrible death from a rare form of aggressive cancer called Multiple Myeloma. Quite honestly, watching my precious dad suffer like he did traumatized me (but also lit a fire in me to help change the world!) and I vowed that I would do all that I possibly could to make sure that would never happen to me or anyone I loved.  I love knowing that my infrared sauna is the best thing available to prevent cancer and other chronic diseases. And I’m honored that through my blog I get to tell the world (well, my readers all around the world!) about one of the very best ways to prevent cancer.

Infrared Sauna for Weight Loss, Calorie Burning and Metabolism Boosting

A 30 minute sauna session burns anywhere from 300-600+ calories (I’ve even seen some research that shows it burns 900 and more calories!). That’s the equivalent of going on a 45 minute jog, but instead you’re relaxing in a sauna! How cool is that?!

Actor, Jeremy Davies told the New York Times that he was able to lose 33 pounds quickly for the movie “Rescue Dawn” using an infrared sauna!

Infrared saunas are known to help break the plateau in weight loss and are especially helpful in releasing stubborn belly fat. That’s because heavy metals and toxic chemicals accumulate primarily in fat cells, especially belly fat, and those toxins actually keep the body from eliminating the fat itself. Many of those stored belly fat toxins are classified as obesogens because they cause fat cells to get larger or multiply. There’s also evidence that obesogens slow the metabolism and increase appetite. Toxins play a huge role in belly fat storage. Helping your body eliminate these toxins will go a long way at losing that stubborn fat. A clean body is able to metabolize unwanted fat properly. The best way to quickly and effectively eliminate these stubborn toxins is through infrared sauna treatment!

Sauna sessions boost your metabolism, too! While you’re relaxing in the infrared heat, your body is hard at work pumping blood and increasing sweat production to try to cool itself. This increases circulation, boosts metabolism and burns calories.

Infrared Sauna for Cardio Exercise

Infrared saunas make it possible for people in wheelchairs or those who are unable to exert themselves or for those who wouldn’t otherwise exercise achieve cardiovascular exercise. A single sauna session has been compared to the same cardio benefits as a 6 to 9 mile run! That makes it an effective weight control and fitness program with the benefits of regular exercise. So cool, right?! The Journal of American Medical Association (8/7/81) explains that infrared sauna use produces a “stress on the cardiovascular system and its regular use may be as effective, as a means of cardiovascular conditioning and burning of calories, as regular exercise.” While you are relaxing in the infrared heat, the body responds to this deep heat by increasing both heart volume and rate. This beneficial heart stress leads to a sought-after cardiovascular training and conditioning effect. Medical studies confirm the use of a sauna to provide cardio conditioning as the body works to cool itself and involves substantial increases in heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate. NASA even uses infrared heat to maintain cardio exercise in astronauts during long space flights!

Benefits of Infrared Sauna on Skin and Cellulite

The profuse sweating achieved through an infrared sauna session carries off deeply imbedded impurities and dry and dead skin cells, leaving the skin glowing and immaculately clean. The increased circulation draws nutrients and mineral-rich fluids to the surface which helps increase firmness and reduces fine lines and wrinkles! You’ll also see improved skin tone, firmness, elasticity, and fresh color. It’s even been shown to heal sun damaged skin. The increased blood circulation and toxin removal has also been shown to relieve acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns, lesions and cuts. In addition, open wounds heal more quickly and scarring is reduced. Infrared therapy is used routinely in burn units in Asia.

The benefits of skin health are quickly seen after just one infrared sauna session! Your skin will be baby soft, glowing and feel deeply cleansed after one sauna session. I feel like I just got the best facial of my life after every session. I love what it’s done for my skin! It’s also greatly improved my scars, almost to the point where they are hardly noticeable anymore. If I keep getting results like this, I believe that in just a few more months my scars will be completely eliminated!

My husband dealt with acne on his back since he was a teenager. We’ve tried numerous things over the years with not much luck. Three sauna sessions later and it’s completely gone. I learned that the infrared heat opens pores that haven’t been functioning in years. It forces out clogged debris and flushes out dead skin. His skin is now completely clear and baby soft 🙂 That’s good news for teenagers and acne sufferers!

Another wonderful skin benefit is the ability to reduce and eliminate cellulite. Cellulite is superficial pockets of trapped fat, water and waste which cause dimpling of the skin. There is a direct link between the slowing of metabolic rates and the storage of toxins in fat cells. Infrared heat increases heart rate and blood circulation, which reverses the accumulation of liquids in the fat cells to reduce and eliminate cellulite! The deep penetration of heat into the cellulite also helps flush out unwanted debris and stubborn toxins trapped in the fat.

Infrared Sauna for Arthritis, Joint, Muscle and Chronic Pain

The clinical studies (and my own personal experience!) on infrared therapy helping those with chronic pain is exciting! My sister has rheumatoid arthritis so I was especially interested in learning how an infrared sauna could help her.

In countries around the world, infrared heat therapy is used to treat patients dealing with many forms of arthritis with success. It’s been shown effective in the treatment of sprains, compression fractures, back pain, whiplash, sciatica, bursitis, muscle spasms, joint stiffness and many other muscular-skeletal ailments as well as proven effective at reducing pain and increasing mobility.  Much of the stiffness, aches and soreness that comes with aging is reduced or eliminated. Many of the studies attribute the pain relief to an increase in the release of natural anti-inflammatory compounds. Deep penetrating infrared heat increases circulation and blood flow, which helps stop inflammation, decreases pain and speeds healing.

As you read above, my chronic neck pain was finally eliminated by infrared therapy when nothing else worked. I’m so thrilled about that! Infrared therapy is a valuable tool to reduce and heal pain naturally without taking prescription drugs!

My husband had an old shoulder injury that would act up a few times a year and leave him with pain and decreased mobility. In the past, whenever it acted up, it would take weeks of rest before he was completely back to normal.  His shoulder has benefited tremendously from infrared therapy. Infrared therapy and supplementing with collagen had him back to normal in 3 days – that’s by far the quickest he’s ever recovered! I’m very curious to find out if his shoulder pain will ever come back since he’s doing regular infrared sauna sessions! I’ll keep you posted!

Infrared Sauna for Detoxification

We live in a world crowded with toxic chemicals that didn’t exist less than a century ago. Our body is now the home to hundreds of these harmful chemicals. In fact, studies show that 100 percent of human fat cell biopsies reveal elevated levels of known toxins! And these toxins get transferred from mother to baby.

These harmful chemicals are difficult for the body to eliminate and they end up accumulating in the body. Over time they can wreck havoc on the body. Toxic overload creates an acidic internal environment and has been implicated in a number of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic fatigue, allergies, skin conditions, asthma, mental illness, hypertension, gastritis, kidney disease and obesity. Studies are beginning to reveal that toxic overload contributes to more serious conditions such as autoimmune diseases, inflammatory/rheumatoid arthritis, and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Infrared heat increases blood circulation and stimulates the sweat glands, releasing those accumulated toxins in the body. Regular infrared sessions detoxifies your body as it rids itself of accumulated highly toxic metals such as lead, mercury, nickel, and cadmium, as well as alcohol, nicotine, sulfuric acid, and other toxic compounds. Saunas also stimulate the cells to release toxins which can then be eliminated by the liver and bowel. Several published studies have now shown that infrared therapy can rapidly remove of a wide range of toxic substances from the body. Through my research I learned that the best way to get rid of heavy metals and pesticide residues is through an infrared sauna.

Why Health Mate Saunas

I spent months and countless hours researching infrared saunas and comparing different low-EMF infrared sauna companies. After narrowing it down to three top companies, I finally settled on Health Mate, a company with a great reputation who have been around for over 35 years. During my comparison research, I found out that Health Mate is actually the manufacturer to all the other sauna companies I was comparing!

I had high expectations since this was a once in a lifetime purchase that I didn’t take lightly. Health Mate not only met my expectations, but exceeded them. Did you know they handpick their wood for sustainability and then plant 10 saplings for every tree they cut down?  I love companies like that! That’s the kind of company I am happy to support and tell others about.

My expectations that Health Mate met and exceeded:

  • VERY low-EMF (among the very lowest in the industry!)
  • Non-treated wood and no toxins in manufacturing
  • Reasonably priced (Update — We are doing a group buy to get wholesale pricing! You can get one for about 40% off with the wholesale pricing!!!! They also offer 25 months 0% interest financing. Click HERE and request wholesale Primally Inspired Group Buy Pricing)
  • Excellent workmanship (it’s a handcrafted work of art and so beautifully made!)
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Excellent customer service
  • Made in North America
  • Environmentally Green Company
  • Energy Efficient (only costs $1.50 per MONTH for regular use!!!)

My sauna was promptly delivered and took my husband about 1/2 hour to completely set up. He is very handy, but it truly was so simple to put together that I think I could have done it myself in about that same time. It’s just a latch system (no tools, no screws!) so you’re basically just latching together the sides, top and bottom. Here’s a picture of my sauna:

Infrared Sauna Benefits. Wow!

It’s beautiful, right?! I love it so much! I bought one of the larger models since I had the space, but there are smaller options available. My mom bought a space saving corner unit from Health Mate that’s absolutely gorgeous! If you’re interested in purchasing your own Health Mate sauna, you can get wholesale pricing with our Group Buy!!!! Click HERE and request information (by phone or email) to see the Primally Inspired Group Buy Price Sheet.

If you are a business owner, it may be worthwhile to put one in your office for the health of your employees and then you can write it off! Infrared saunas can stop the flu, a cold and other sicknesses before they develop further!

Health Benefits for Chromotherapy (Color Light Therapy)

Health Mate saunas also come with the addition of color light therapy called chromotherapy.  Chromotherapy is the use of colored lights to stimulate the senses, the body, and the mind. It is powerful phototherapy utilizing the properties of all 7 colors of the healing spectrum. Color Light therapy has the ability to elevate moods, produce soothing mindsets, stimulate cell regeneration, and help in healing.

Light therapy is well known and documented to help treat Seasonal Depression. Light therapy also has the ability to decrease inflammation and pain and accelerate wound healing and after-surgery recovery. Another very popular and exciting use of light therapy is for the treatment of anti-aging. Many people, myself included, notice a reduction in fine lines, age spots and wrinkles with red light color therapy (yes, this is the same red light therapy that fancy spas charge a fortune for and you can have access to it regularly with your own infrared sauna!!).

(source – Azeem, Y;Raza SM, 2005, “A Critical Analysis of Chromotherapy and Its Scientific Evolution” and Grubson, L, 1982, “Color has a powerful effect on behavior, researches assert”)

Here are the colors and their healing properties:

  • Red: Enhances libido and increases energy. Red light therapy activates collagen cells and helps stimulate skin to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It energizes organs and promotes faster healing when used in conjunction with infrared therapy. Promotes cellular growth and circulation, very helpful for lymphatic movement, colds, arthritis, anemia, liver problems, low energy, or pneumonia. It stimulates the adrenal glands and improves strength, stimulates hemoglobin production (helpful for anemics).
  • Yellow: Encourages mental clarity, nervous system, and digestive tract. It heals pores and scar tissue. Used to treat gas, diabetes, eczema, and constipation.
  • Green: The universal healing color, relaxes thoughts and muscles and nerves. Encourages peace and harmony, lowers blood pressure and soothes the autonomic nervous system and helping heart problems, ulcers, cancer, headaches, and flu.
  • Blue: Eases symptoms of pain, anxiety, and depression. Some research shows blue cools down inflammation, lowers fevers, helps high blood pressure and relieves migraines. Other research has shown blue is effective in reducing acne because the blue lights kill bacteria which is a major source of acne infections. It’s mentally relaxing, helpful for sleep problems, communication and speech problems. Reduces nervous problems and increases feelings of being positive and well.
  • Orange: Frees the mind, combines physical energy with mental wisdom. Cheering, warm, non-constricting, helps us embrace and assimilate new ideas. An emotional stimulant, helps us lose inhibitions, bringing joy and zest for life. Helps repair kidneys, cough, seizure disorders, cramps, and sinus infections.
  • Violet: Heals diseases of the scalp, sciatica, tumors, meningitis, cramps, concussion. It is often recommended for neurological pain caused by conditions like multiple sclerosis and fibromyalgia. Nourishes brain cells, purifies thoughts and feelings and encourages inspiration and spirituality. Helps us tap our own wisdom and inner strength, artistic talent and creativity. Da Vinci said you can increase power of meditation tenfold by meditating under violet rays, such as in stained glass church windows.
  • White: This is the most common color used in LED color therapy. It uses the three primary colors (Red, Green, & Blue), making it easy to receive the benefits from all the colors used for color therapy. Research has shown that white light can even increase vitamin D levels!

Infrared Sauna Benefits. Wow!

Great post! I have also been looking into purchasing an infrared sauna. Please let me know which model you chose. Thanks!

Great article Kelly. My husband and i have been contemplating getting a sauna for a long time. Did you research Sauna Ray by any chance?

  3. Avatar

Kelly, I was so excited to read this! I had been wanting to try an infrared sauna for years. I finally met a woman who had one at her massage studio in Lemoyne and tried it and LOVED it. She told me she uses it daily and is thrilled with it. I actually just emailed her a week or two ago to say I’d like to interview her at some point for my blog.
I’m so happy to hear that you love yours…it’s something I’ve considered for a long time. I love that you did the research for us. While I was definitely familiar with many of the benefits, I didn’t know about the color therapy…makes it even more exciting! And hearing the results you and your husband have had is amazing.
As always, great info! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Very cool, Elizabeth!! Yes, that chromotherapy is so fun and learning about all the therapeutic power of color was fascinating and impressive! I want to do a blog post in the future just on that because the stories and studies I’ve read are so neat! I mostly use the red light since it activates collagen production and helps scars, anti-aging, etc. But a few times when I was in a less than stellar mood, I turned it on orange and I did notice a difference in my mood!

Kelly: Is this a near infrared sauna apposed to a far infrared sauna? Are there lights and how close do you get to them? I purchased the lights and installed them in a shower downstairs. I enjoy it very much and find the benefits of an infrared sauna. Mine isn’t as luxurious, but the price was right. Any comments on the near infrared lights installed in a shower?

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Hi Jane! This is a very low-EMF far-infrared sauna, which is on the same wavelength of light that gives life to the entire plant kingdom and are very similar wavelengths naturally emitted by the human body (which is one of the reasons so many people feel so rejuvenated and balanced after being in contact with those far-infrared waves!)

Near-infrared has some really great benefits, too! I love your handiness and what you’ve done for your health by turning your shower into a healing sanctuary – very cool! The only drawback I found on near-infrared is that there’s some evidence that they can cause cataracts. The other thing is that the research and clinical evidence on the near-infrared saunas isn’t really there as compared to the decades of evidence, recommendations and clinical studies for the far-infrared saunas.

To answer your question, my sauna has 10 heaters. I can lean right up against all the heaters without any issues (there’s protective wood “grates” over all of them).

Thanks for all the great information about the infrared sauna. Wonderful post. I’m very interested in getting a sauna. You have given me lot’s to consider.

Thanks so much! Love your blog.

If purchasing a sauna is not in my budget, would I receive health benefits from using the sauna at my gym?
    Thank u!

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Hi Abbie! You will receive some health benefits from a regular sauna so I definitely would still use it at your gym if an infrared is not in the budget quite yet. The traditional sauna just heats the skin and air, while the infrared penetrates the skin deeply to remove toxins and waste from the internal organs, joints, deep muscles, etc. The traditional sauna you get mostly a “water sweat” versus the infrared which is a “fat sweat” (the penetrating heat from the infrared heat gets deep into the fat to help flush out fat-causing toxins). And since the infrared goes so deep into the body, it’s able to do a lot of internal healing that’s not possible with a conventional sauna. Hope that helps!

Oh one more thing! It’s worth a shot telling your gym about infrared saunas and inquring if they could get one. But definitely take advantage of their regular sauna if not!

Great post! We have had our sauna a week. I have a chronic illness, this was recommended by my Dr. So we found a place in our house & bought one. ($45 for 15 minutes at local spa) I just finished my sauna/shower a little while ago, so I was relaxing & checking my emails. I’ve only been in it 4 times so far. Ours is a 2 person, so it’s a great place for my husband & I to reconnect at the end of the day. The first time in I hardly sweated. Each time I sweat a little more. It does have wonderful effects on my skin. So far I have had really deep good quality sleep after the sauna. I would caution anyone with a medical issue to clear it with their Dr. My doctor tells me I can be in no longer than 15 minutes @ I have to drink electrolytes before & after to avoid dehydration.

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Very cool, Aliceyn! I hope it continues to bring you healing and good benefits! And thank you for the tips! I agree that it’s best to clear it with your doctor and to start off with a very minimal time – 5-10 minutes at first and work your way up.

What kind of space did you need for your sauna?

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Hi Jackie, we had an extra room that was empty so we just put our sauna in that – it didn’t require anything but an outlet. But they can be put in a garage, a basement, even outside. The company I picked has a space saving corner unit and much smaller 1-2 person units, too if space is an issue.

Bravo! It makes me want to pursue this greatly. For the benefit, I don’t feel the cost is excessive. A lot for some but worth saving if need be. Thx. This is such valuable info!

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Thanks, Alena! And you make a really good point. Before all the research, I used to think that owning my own personal infrared sauna would just be a luxurious indulgence. But my mind has been totally changed after all the research and especially after experiencing our own benefits. So many people don’t take their health seriously until they get seriously sick and then they spend all their money and empty all their savings accounts trying to get well. I now view having my infrared sauna like the best preventative medicine I could buy. Kind of like I couldn’t afford not to get one, you know?!

Where did this color info come from? What is the validity of that?

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

It is so fascinating, right?! Being an art major and a fan of art and design, I was already familiar with color theory and the psychology of color. I knew that being around different colors has the power to change our biochemistry. Just seeing the color red has been proven to increase the appetite, which is why almost every major food chain or fast food restaurant uses red on their menu, logo, inside the building, etc. And soft blues and greens have been proven to reduce blood pressure and calm anxiety, which is why you’ll almost always see those soft colors in hospitals, dentist offices, etc. Years ago, I used to teach large groups about the psychology of color and used to joke that if you’re trying to lose weight, don’t paint your kitchen red hahaha! (Although it’s a great color for a dining room because it also stimulates conversation!)

Any good color psychology book will teach you more about the impact of color (and should include the references and studies) if you want to learn more. I wish I had a specific one to recommend to you, but nothing is coming to mind right now! But to learn more about the healing and therapeutic power of colors, including how to use color as medicine, I do have a few to recommend — Color Medicine and Light: Medicine of the Future. Hope that helps! Oh! I also put 2 of my sources I used for the chromotherapy section – they’re in italics if you missed them 🙂

It greatly helps my fibromyalgia! I agree with you that it was one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. My 3 kids haven’t had to go on any antibiotics or medication since we got ours 3 years ago. Thank you for this well done article and for making more people aware about them!

Hey Kelly! Thanks for the write up on your sauna. I know Bill & Hayley from Primal Palate have a similar sauna in their house. Seeing their blog posts piqued my interest, but now after your post and a recent diagnosis of parasites in my liver, I was wondering if you came across anything about this helping to kill parasites. Apparently I’ve had parasites for quite some time and that’s why my doctor thinks my gallbladder went bad. These little buggers have wreaked havoc on my body including making me deficient in many important minerals. Thanks so much for the info!

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Hey AJ! Yes, I came across a lot about parasites and the infrared sauna. Also, almost every book I read during this research included parasites and stated that infrared sauna therapy is effective at killing them. The infrared sauna is kind of like a double whammy – the parasites get weakened and killed in heat, while the immune system runs at it’s prime in the heat. So the immune system is mega boosted and gets more effective at killing them off, too. Dr. Wendy Myers says, “Parasites are very intolerant to heat. Consistent infrared sauna therapy is an ideal parasite treatment because it kills the parasites, the recurring parasite hatchlings, in addition to hard to reach areas that parasites may reside, like the brain.” Hope that helps!

So, in light of your research and some of the comments… In your opinion, would a far infrared heating pad (like Sharper Image has) or the near infrared lights (like commenter Jane mentioned) be a better choice for those of us unable to afford the sauna? Thanks for your research and comments of this – much appreciated and valued!

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

That’s a great question, Gina! I would have to go with the near infrared lights like Jane because of the far greater sweat volume you’d achieve vs the heating pad. Growing up in a very money tight, one income home and also living paycheck to paycheck and experiencing much financial difficulty during the first years of my marriage, I am very sensitive to money issues. And I do think it would be worthwhile to save for a far infrared sauna in the meantime. I would never recommend that if I didn’t 100% think it would be worth every single penny and more because I know how drastically it can move the mark on your health and how much it can prevent sickness and disease down the road, too.

      • Avatar

Thanks Kelly! I do have an autoimmune disorder already. I appreciate your honesty and your help on this!

      • Avatar

I see in your article that this helps with autism and I was wondering what effect it had on Asperger’s as I have a grandson with Asperger’s. Thanks!

        • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Most of the reports and testimonials I’ve read report better sleep, better digestion, improved behavior, significant decrease in seizures, lessened anxiety and better attention for those with autism, including Aspergers with far infrared sauna therapy.

Dr. Rachel West out in California is nationally recognized for treating kids with special needs, especially those with autism spectrum disorders, including Aspergers and she is an advocate of infrared saunas and uses them as part of her program. She says, “We see oxygenation of cells and better sleep. Indeed, some of the most recent research suggests that the environment plays a powerful role in causing or exacerbating these health challenges that involve behavioral, neurological and physical symptoms. Special-needs kids invariably benefit when their body’s elimination pathways are working optimally. Infrared therapy is a non-toxic, no side-effect way of ridding the body of harmful pollutants, especially heavy metals.”

I read a neat story about The Clark family, who has a child with Aspergers and asthma. Before infrared sauna therapy he was taking 6-7 medications to manage his conditions. Today, he uses the infrared sauna and takes vitamins and minerals. “He uses his asthma inhaler only occasionally, compared with several times a day previously. We think the sauna has unplugged the pathways,” his mom and dad say. They also reported him doing much better in school, generally feeling better and not feeling as angry.

In the medical literature heavy metal toxicity (especially lead, aluminum and mercury) are very prevalent in the autistic population. The Kotsanis Institute that specializes in autism spectrum disorders says the elimination of toxic metals and chemicals via infrared heat has drastically improved behavior in their autistic patients. “In our 1992 study, we verified the existence of chemicals, food additives, and food sensitivities in this population. Again, as with metal toxicity, there are numerous methods for chemical detoxification. The best way to eliminate chemicals is through the skin by infra-red sauna.”

I think I love hearing the personal testimonies the most. If anyone reading this has experienced benefits from loved ones with autism or Aspergers using an infrared sauna, please chime in – I know you’re out there because I’ve communicated with some of you 🙂

Hi there! I have the same sauna as you and have also seen major health benefits from using it. I’m curious what temp you use and for how long?

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Oh cool, Kate! I set it at 135 degrees and go in when the temperature is about 120 and then stay in for about 30 minutes while it warms up to 135. I’ve been using it about 5 times a week. Anything hotter than 135 for me is a little too hot and it’s not as pleasurable and anything lower doesn’t cause me to sweat nearly as much. My husband uses it at 145 degrees for 20-25 minutes. My advice to others who are curious about temperatures would be to find a temperature that causes you to sweat a good amount while still being a pleasurable, comfortable experience.

Hello Kelly, thank you for a very informative post. I have been using my Infrared Sauna since 2005 when I was diagnosed with MS. It has been my greatest treatment regime for battling my MS. By detoxing my body I have given my body a fighting chance to minimize the affects of my MS. My balance has improved greatly, the pain nearly unnoticeable and the fog has cleared up. I purchased my sauna from Sauna Ray in Canada and few of our MS members have done so as well with very similar results. The greatest measure of the benefits of the infrared sauna is many of my elisions have healed over and it is seen in the progression of my MRI’s …. No side affect the healing of the body ….

  16. Avatar

Hi Kelly, what a helpful and informative post! I am interested in buying an infrared sauna and am trying to decide between buying a new one from health mate or buying a used one that is local and we could purchase and start using right away. The used one we are looking at was built in 2009 I was told. I was wondering if you know if the lower EMF rating is a recent thing or was that also the standard back in 2009. I would willingly pay more for a new one if that meant it would have lower EMFs although that won’t be easy on our family financially, but the benefits of that are important to me.

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Hi Angela! Low-EMF technology is fairly new (especially the ULTRA-low EMF units – which is virtually no detected EMF and that is very, very new – in the last few months new), but there’s a chance this used one could have the low EMF technology. Even though low EMF units are a fairly new technology, I discovered that not all companies use it because it’s more expensive. And what’s frustrating is that some companies *say* on the packaging and marketing material that they have low-EMF units, but 3rd party testing has proved that to not be the case. Any company can say they have a low-EMF unit so I think it’s important to look for a company that has 3rd party testing on their units. Like you, ultra low EMF is super important to me – I really don’t want to sit in a box of EMF while I’m trying to detoxify!

If you know the name of the company of the used one you are looking into, let me know! I have a whole notebook of notes and info about the different companies I researched and talked with so it’s a good chance I may have some info on it.

Thank you Kelly! I didn’t know you responded. I thought if you did it would come to my email but it didn’t. So I thought by chance I would check your blog post again. We ended up getting great helpful information from Joe Cruz with Healthmate(and told him you sent us!) and decided to buy a new one direct from him because the year of the used one was 2009 and Joe said that depending on manufacture date the used one could have had more EMFs because they started those improvements around 2009 and the used sauna may have been manufactured earlier even though it was purchased in 2009. So we decided to go new to be on the safe side. It’s on it’s way to us so we are excited to use it soon! Thank you for your response and you were so sweet to send it on Christmas Day!

        • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Oh I am so excited for you, Angela!!! You are going to love it so much! And I’m glad Joe was able to answer all of your questions, too. I hope you will keep me updated on the benefits all of you notice, too – it’s so exciting to me how quickly and how much this can help many different things so I can’t wait to hear your story 🙂 Take care!

Thank you Kelly! I will definitely let you know what benefits we experience! Our hope is that it will help our family sleep better for one. We have a 5yr old and 1 1/2yr old that struggle with sleep. I often only get 2-3hrs (broken up, not even straight through) of sleep for months on end and then sometimes a surprise bonus of a great 6hr night every once in awhile between trying to help the boys back to sleep. Our older son has some ADHD type issues we would love to see improvement with. Our 1 1/2yr old we hope might benefit from the color therapy for speech, since he is delayed. And I have really bad scarring that I hope will heal :-). That’s my list of top hopes for healing. I will let you know how it goes on those specifics :-).

Hey Kelly, I just had to send you a msg & thank you for this awesome info. I didn’t know a single thing about infrared saunas until your sent this on Dec 3rd. My first thought was oh no I hate saunas for more than 5 minutes. After reading the entire email, I was blown away. My husband didn’t have a clue that I even subscribe to Primarily Inspired. So I made him read it. By the way the bit about your husbands shoulder, well that was an issue for my husband as well. We purchased one that day!!! We absolutely love it. Our 10 & 11 year old’s love it as well. I can’t believe the difference in our skin & sleep in just the 1st week (now 3 weeks in)! Love the Light Therapy! And the aroma cup, have only used lavender, so far. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    • Avatar

And thank you for the discount & freebies!!!

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

This makes me so happy, Denise!!! Aren’t they amazing?! So glad you are loving it and noticing some differences already! I hope it helps your husband’s shoulder as much as it does for Zach, too.

P.S. I really hope you got the Primally Inspired group buy wholesale pricing (all the details of that weren’t finalized yet back in the beginning of Dec). If not, let me know and I’ll make sure to get it straightened out. It sounds like you may have though since you got all the extra freebies 🙂

  20. Avatar

Thanks for all your work and research on this. We are planning to buy one with this awesome great group discount! I looked through the comments but maybe missed the one you have…so…what one do you have? We are excited.

  21. Avatar

I can attest to many of these benefits and I love my infrared sauna! I never heard of them before my doctor introduced them for my autoimmune and thyroid conditions. It made the biggest difference in just one month that I purchased one for my home so I could use it more frequently. It was the best purchase I’ve made. My whole family has benefited tremendously, especially my youngest son who was on 3 medications and constantly sick. He’s now off all his medications and hasn’t been sick since we bought it! Thank you, Kelly, for making people aware of how much they can help! I forwarded your article to my friends because it’s so well done and informative. Health Mate is a wonderful company!

  22. Avatar

How do we sign up for the group sauna buy? I clicked on the link and it took me to the Healthmate page.

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Hi Kim! You have to request information from Health Mate by either calling them or filling out the inquiry form on their website. When you inquire ask them to send you the Primally Inspired Group Buy price sheet. The group buy wholesale pricing they gave us is reserved for their large wholesale clients and they can’t publish the prices to the public.

      • Avatar

Good point. When we recently bought ours there was no lower price. It was the same as the pricing list they had on December 6th when I inquired right after Kelly’s article. I asked if the rates given to me through the group wholesale buy were the exact same as December 6th and they said yes they could offer me nothing lower. So I was surprised and disappointed. I made sure they knew I was sent by Kelly. Was there something else I was supposed to ask for? We paid a high price I thought!

Hi Kelly! So excited to learn of the group buying opportunity at healthmate. I wondered if you had researched clearlight brand saunas. any thoughts on the full spectrum lights in their saunas? im torn between both companies yoga models… In a multitasking kinda girl 😉

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Hi Kari! Clearlight originally made my top 3 back when I began researching so we are on the same page 🙂 And yoga model?! Jealous!! That would be so fantastic, I wish we could have swung it! I just recently found out from an insider that Health Mate has been the manufacturer for Clearlight all the way up until 2 months ago and now Clearlight is importing all their saunas from China, which is a huge bummer.

      • Avatar

Well i look at it this way… My local massage therapist has one and rents an hour in the sauna for only $15. If i could get there 3x aweek, that is the same amount monthly as the financing payment for the yoga model!!

  27. Avatar

I am a wholehearted believer in far infrared therapy, too! This is great to read! I’ve been doing 3 weekly infrared sauna sessions for the last 3 months and this morning I slipped into a pair of jeans I haven’t been able to wear in several years… Have gone from a size 16/18 to a 12! How fantastic would it be to have one in my home! I will be looking into the group buy and am very excited about the possibility! THANK YOU!

  28. Avatar

Dear Kelly, Thank you so much for this info as well as all your research. It made our process so much easier, and our sauna arrived today. My husband set it up while I went to the grocery store. We both sat in it for 15 minutes before dinner…and muscles so relaxed we could hardly eat LOL. Will wait later after this. Love the lights and the essential oil dispenser. Love the whole thing, so pretty and smells good inside. I signed up for your seminar too.

  29. Avatar

Love your post! Is it too late to get in on the group buy?

I can definitely testify to the healing of saunas. I too researched and have had my sauna a couple years. I have IC, a bladder issue. And get flare ups every now and again. Sitting in the sauna relieves every bit of the symptoms. I actually sit in mine quite often. (Once a day) and sometimes twice if my husband wants to sit of an evening. Thank you you for the great post! Many more Happy sauna sittings to you!

Hi Kelly, I live in Tasmania, Australia and was the agent here for ‘Health Mate’ far infrared saunas. I totally agree with you, with out a doubt they are the best sauna around and the health benefits you have mentioned are amazing. I am not just saying this because I had the Tasmanian agency … as I thoroughly researched Health Mate and other saunas before getting on board with them. Sold many saunas with great results. I can personally recommend it for cancer pain as my brother was in so much back pain with his cancer and nothing that would give him any relief at all .. until trying the sauna. It was so unbelievable for him that of course he purcased one. A huge thumbs up for “Health Mate” far infra red saunas.

  33. Avatar

I am ready to buy a sauna and need more info to decide on which one it will be. curious about their financing as well. maybe get a super nice model…. do you know if the financing is in house or third party? also does anyone know how much the enrichIII is with the discount? I have emailed about 5 times and called twice with no response.

  34. Avatar

How do you use the color therapy? Is it at the same time as your regular sauna session, or is it something separate?

  35. Avatar

I just found this post and I’ve been going to a local spa for my sauna sessions. Now I’m addicted!! Does the group pricing still apply? Should I just mention your website to get the pricing?

  36. Avatar

Just heard from Health Mate that their saunas are entirely manufactured in China. Really confused now!!

  37. Avatar

My doctor put us onto infrared sauna’s. We tried one out at a local spa and the results where fantastic! After only 5 or 6 sessions we both experienced more energy and a feeling of calmness. I think the way the sauna’s infrared rays penetrate the skin must be great for detoxing the body. I even here there great for arthritis pain.

  38. Avatar

This is such comprehensive information- thanks for sharing! I don’t think a lot of people realize the benefits of using different colored lights!

  39. Avatar

Hello!:) thank you so much for such an incredibly helpful and informative post! I want one of these saunas soooo bad and can’t wait for the day I can save enough for one! I am wondering if it’s too late for your group buy discount at this point? I just sent my info over to them:)

  40. Avatar

That is so fantastic! Wow! Thank you so much I do hope we are able to and that makes it much more possible!:) can you tell me if it will still be 40% off retail?

Hi Kelly, I’m just wondering if you can still use sauna while pregnant?

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Hi Adriana! Based on the research I’ve done, I found infrared saunas to be safe in temps of 100 degrees or lower during pregnancy. But as with most things in pregnancy, I think it’s a personal choice and something you need to feel comfortable and safe doing. (disclaimer — it’s always best to check with your doctor or midwife)

Personally, I’m still using my sauna while pregnant. I put it at 100 degrees a few times a week for about 20-30 minutes and I’ve done so all throughout my pregnancy and LOVE it! It’s such a relaxing time for me and the baby. I don’t sweat at all at that temperature and time, but my body (especially my joints and back!) loves the relaxing warm heat. I’ve been enjoying and noticing some pretty cool benefits I’ve gotten from the chromotherapy, too. I’m currently working on a post all about the health benefits of color light therapy because it’s been extra beneficial and noticeable for me during this time…maybe because of the heightened sensitivity we have in pregnancy 🙂

The type on your blog is in gray and it does not allow me to make it bigger in order to read it. I would have really love to read it but I CAN NOT SEE IT!!! What is the deal????? I keep finding interesting blogs, but the default is gray instead of black type, and it does not allow to make the type bigger…

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

I’m so sorry you are having trouble with reading my site, Barbara. I hope I can offer a tip or two that may help you with any webpage that you are having trouble seeing:
You can change the size font on any computer! But since everyone has different browsers and I don’t know which one you have, you’ll have to google it. Just go to google and type in “How to increase the font on __________” (fill in the blank with your browser). It’s usually really easy and google should bring up step by step directions. For many browsers, you can press control and the + at the same time. Each time you do that, it will increase the font size! And if you go too big, control and the – button will make it smaller.

I hope that helps you! Take care!

  43. Avatar

Hi Kelly, love your blog! I bought the Enrich II last year through your group deal and I love the sauna and all the great benefits but I’m not at all happy with the customer service. The sauna began shutting off and I first contacted them Dec 16. I had trouble reaching them but when I finally did, they said I needed a new power supply and they would ship it within 3 days. I’ve had several unsatisfactory conversations with different employees, many of which said they would call back in an hour and never did, since then and they still have not shipped the part. So as of Jan 29th, all I have is a broken sauna that is now a year old.

  44. Avatar

I also did not have a good experience with Health Mate Sauna Customer Service. Our inside control panel started messing up (the “O” for On or Off and the first number showing the temperature suddenly stopped working). I contacted CS through the form online and never heard back from them. I did it again thinking maybe it didn’t take, and still never got a reply. So I finally emailed them and told them my complaint and asked if I could get a replacement part. It took them quite a bit to get back to me, and then they didn’t send it when they said they would. After I contacted them again, they said it was on backorder. Waited the extra time they allotted, and contacted them again. And they still didn’t have the part. Then all of a sudden the light started working again on ours, so I just gave up. So I never got the part, and they were not proactive in letting me know that the part was on backorder, and apparently never put me on the list for reorder. I also never knew if my sauna was registered correctly or not. The form online didn’t seem to work, and every time I asked about it in my emails they never answered my question. Thankfully it started working on it’s own.

Also, Kelly, I’ve been hearing a lot about how Far Infrared is really not as good for you, and Near Infrared being safer, because of EMF and Far Infrared Saunas separate light from heat, and the fact that FIR uses LED which isn’t good for you. Thoughts, please??

  45. Avatar

Do you recommend carbon heaters or ceramic or carbon/ceramic?

  46. Avatar

I know that infrared saunas have been so helpful for human health but I didn’t know that it has such an important benefit before . In the past , people used to use steam sauna for their health but nowadays infrared saunas are more useful than it and they are extremely beneficial for your health.

  47. Avatar

    Hi,
Great posts and videos. I have been researching Infrared saunas for a few months and the more I read and watch the more confused I get. I did try a Health Mate sauna at a spa a few times and have had better results than Sunlighten, but was also considering Clearlight and Finnleo/Tylo but haven’t found a place to try them.

Do you still have your group pricing in place because I think I am ready to buy in the next week or two? i just want to test the EMF’S since I bought an EMF meter to test the Health Mate.

Keep up the great work. You are very motivating and provide great information – you are helping to change the world one person at a time.

    Thank you.

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

      Hi Dean,

Thank you so much for your kind words – you really encouraged me today!

It sounds like you are very thorough and have researched all the best brands, too. I hope you get a chance to find and test out the Clearlight and Finnleo/Tylo.

Health Mate will still honor our group pricing. If you have any questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to answer anything I can.

Whichever brand you ultimately decide to choose, I think you’ll be really happy owning an infrared sauna. It’s truly been one of the best purchases I’ve ever made and I still look forward to my sauna sessions! Take care and enjoy!
