April Stitch Fix Review

It’s Stitch Fix time again and my April Stitch Fix just arrived on my doorstep. There’s 2 items that I’m undecided about this time and I’d love your input!

So here’s a little backstory: I got rid of over 95% of my clothes last year and completely changed my shopping habits. Instead of buying a gazillion pieces of clothing like I used to do, I now only have a few select pieces that I absolutely, 100% love and feel amazing in whenever I wear them. And although I don’t have a lot of pieces of clothing anymore, every single thing in my closet is a 10 out of 10 for me and makes me feel my very best.

My closet is now such an inspiring, happy place.  I know that whatever I put on that day will make me feel special in some way. I can’t even begin to tell you what a difference this concept has made in my life. Not only is it ridiculously freeing to get rid of excess stuff, but it’s pretty life changing when you start each day by putting your best foot forward and feeling extra special.

This past week I did a little Spring closet cleaning. I cleared out most of cold weather pieces with the intention of making room for some fun, new  pieces for Spring. I scheduled a Fix from Stitch Fix and set it to arrive at the beginning of Spring.  And it’s here!

What is Stitch Fix?

With Stitch Fix, you get a surprise box complete with 5 handpicked clothing and/or accessories picked out just for you from your very own personal stylist.  You get to keep only what you want (for me it has to be a 10 out of 10!) and you can send back whatever you don’t want in the postage paid envelope. And you can schedule a Fix whenever you want – no monthly commitments or anything like that.  I don’t even have to go shopping anymore! Love that. Oh and for those wondering about the cost, it is affordable. The clothes are definitely more expensive than Target, but about equal to what you would expect at a department store.

If you’d like to learn more about Stitch Fix or sign up for your very own Fix, you can click HERE. I’ve been a huge fan of this service for almost a year now.

My April Stitch Fix….

After taking a few month’s break from Stitch Fix, you can imagine my disappointment when I got word that my regular stylist, Kieu-Kelly was no longer working for the company. Getting a good stylist that “gets you” is key to a good Fix. And let’s just say that I felt like I hit the Stitch Fix jackpot with Kieu-Kelly. I am still bummed that we will no longer be working together and I wish her all the best. My new stylist definitely has some big shoes to fill.

I realize there will be a learning/getting to know you curve with a new stylist and quite honestly, I wasn’t expecting a great Fix this time around once I found out that I was getting a new stylist.

So you can imagine my surprise when I opened up the package and saw this……

April Stitch Fix Review from Kelly at Primally Inspired

Bright happy colors! And super fun patterns! That’s totally me! Maybe my new stylist, Sara might get me after all. Let’s take a closer look at what I got. I’d love your input and your help deciding what I should keep.

Papermoon Bart Scoop Neck Blouse

Papermoon Bart Scoop Neck Blouse from Stitch Fix

I’d like to incorporate more fun patterns into my closet so this scoop neck blouse was the first thing that jumped out at me. I couldn’t wait to try it on. Everything about this shirt was a winner for me, especially those adorable gold buttons in the back. And it gets bonus points because it’s yellow. Sunshine yellow is one of my very favorite colors to wear.

Papermoon Bart Scoop Neck Blouse

When I tried it on, the fit was perfect.  I paired it with some mint green accessories and mint pumps and that’s when I knew I had to have it. This top is going to be really versatile piece this spring. Plus I can pair it with so many different colored accessories to make each outfit look a little different.  Love that. It looks amazing with a white pencil skirt for a dressier look. And when the weather gets cooler during the spring evenings, the bright mint green Cardigan that I got from my Winter Fix is the perfect pairing with it, too.  My new stylist, Sara, is off to a great start!

VERDICT: KEPT & it’s my new favorite shirt! 🙂

Collective Concepts Esten Button-Up Sleeveless Blouse

Pixley June Polka Dot Skirt

Collective Concepts Esten Button-Up Sleeveless Blouse and Pixley June Polka Dot Skirt

My stylist suggested that I pair this pretty green blouse with the polka dot skirt she sent and then add a statement necklace. So I did.  It’s super adorable, but still a really classy look. I felt so good in this outfit!

I adore that green blouse. I’m such a sucker for anything in this color and I think those little neckline pleats add a fun element to an otherwise plain blouse. I can easily dress it up or down, which is important to me. I think it would look especially refreshing paired with my white denim from my August Fix, too.

Now let’s talk about that pencil skirt because I need your help. If you’ve been keeping up with my Stitch Fix posts or if you follow me on Pinterest, you already know how much I love polka dots. Like really love them. When I first saw the polka dot pencil skirt in my Fix, I had mixed emotions. It has polka dots so obviously I love it, but I currently own another polka dot skirt from Stitch Fix that is also navy and white.

April Stitch Fix Review - Polka Dot Skirt

Sure, they are completely different styles, but I don’t need 2 navy and white polka dot skirts. I adore my October Stitch Fix swing polka dot skirt, but I also really, really like the smaller dot, classic pencil skirt. Both are 10’s to me. I would end up selling the swing skirt if I kept the pencil skirt. So right now I’m trying to decide which one is the better one for me and I’m undecided. I love them both. I’d love to hear your opinions – you guys have really helped me out in some of my past Fix’s and I’m hoping you can help me out with this one, too!

VERDICT on top: KEPT

VERDICT on skirt: Undecided, help me decide!

Brixon Ivy Foster Halter Dress

Brixon Ivy Foster Halter Dress

This dress! Here’s the sad little story about this dress. I flipping love everything about this dress. The length is perfect, the neckline pleats are adorable (ha – I must have a thing for neckline pleats now), the little peekaboo detail is modest yet sexy, the color is gorgeous and I feel so dang good in it. But I tried it on and it was so big! I know it looks like it fits in the picture, but that’s only because I have inches upon inches pinned in the back. Wahh.

So I have 2 options: Keep the gorgeous dress and shell out more money to get it altered OR send it back in hopes that my stylist picks out something even better for next month. Right now, I’m leaning towards sending it back only because I don’t have a lot of free time to deal with getting it altered. But my mind could easily be changed since I adore this dress and feel like it would be a timeless, classy piece for years to come. Besides the fact that it’s way too big, it’s definitely a 10 for me. What do you think – should I keep it?

VERDICT: Undecided. Please help!

Skies are Blue Maison Mesh Trim Blouse

April Stitch Fix Review - Skies are Blue Maison Mesh Trim Blouse

When I first saw this top, I was definitely drawn to the fun, random patterns and the bright, happy colors. I had high hopes for this shirt, but when I tried it on it wasn’t a 10 for me.  I think it’s completely adorable, but something about the fit just isn’t right for me. It fits well up top, but it seems to balloon out towards the bottom, leaving me looking a bit shapeless. I tried belting it, but that didn’t help.

Also, the very dark mesh neckline trim isn’t flattering for my face. I am a huuuuuge believer in wearing the right colors for your skin and for your energy (THIS is where I discovered all about the right colors for you and your unique energy. I tell everyone I know about this Dressing Your Truth program – total game changer). The wrong colors for you can cast unflattering shadows on your face, make your wrinkles appear deeper and totally age you. But wearing the right colors do just the opposite and makes your face come alive. Wearing the right colors for you is one the cheapest face lifts you can get!

My colors are bright spring colors and I am a Dressing Your Truth Type 1. This deep dark color close to my face doesn’t flatter me or my skin at all. Can you see a difference in my face between this and the rest of the tops in my Fix?  The other tops are the right colors for me and seem to bring out a twinkle in my eyes, make my cheeks glow and almost gives a sparkle like quality to my face.  This dark color that close to my face washes me out and doesn’t do anything positive for my face.  Pretty crazy the difference, right? I’m telling you, you’ve got to check out this Dressing Your Truth link that teaches you all about your colors and your energy, helps you discover your own personal style and how to bring out your own beauty (and so much more but this is the wrong blog post to tell you all about that. lol) Just trust me on this – check it out, then thank me later.  And then get in touch with me and let’s talk all about it because I’m totally obsessed with Dressing Your Truth and could talk about it all day 🙂

With so much pressure our society puts on women these days, it’s so easy to feel “less than.”  I feel really strongly that every woman deserves to look and feel beautiful.  I totally went off on a tangent (sorry!), but that Dressing Your Truth program changed my life for the better in so many ways. It’s hard for me to keep quiet about it!

Anyway, back to the shirt…..

VERDICT: SENDING BACK

I just want to give a huge shout-out to my new stylist, Sara. She totally impressed and surprised me. To be honest, this is one of my favorite Fix’s so far! I am definitely keeping 2 of the pieces and there’s a possibility that I might even keep one or two more. I’m thrilled with that. Thank you, Sara!

I am especially grateful to those who leave me a comment and give me your input on these items that I’m undecided on. Girl friends have been really hard to come by since I moved so I really look forward to these girly chats with you! 🙂

Keep both polka dot skirts! I would wear that pencil skirt to work every day and the swing skirt on weekends or date night.

I have to agree with Beth that I think you should keep both skirts. You love the pattern and they are so very different ~ how fun that you can have two totally different looks with minimal pieces. My first thought when I saw the halter dress was ‘oh, that is waaay too big on her’. I think you should return it and have confidence that your new stylist will find something equally gorgeous that fits in the future.

Keep the dress and have it altered! I know it’s a pain, but so worth it. I just did the same thing…had a dress from Banana Republic that was too big all over. Wore it to a formal party out of desperation, but felt so dumpy in it. But loved the dress. Finally took it to the tailor…had it taken in and hemmed a few inches…think we are around the same size, and dresses are always hard for me. Anyway, now I LOVE it. I’ve worn it twice in one month and had so many complements. Since the dress in your Stitch Fix is a special dress, that you will probably wear for years, I say have it altered!

I HAD to check out the link you provided about Dressing Your Truth. Listened to the 1st segment and now I have to wait until tomorrow to hear the next. I am not a patient person, but I’m very curious to hear/learn more. Thanks!

Lynn, I know what you mean! It killed me to just get one email per day (I’m soooo not patient, too!), but it does get pretty deep and gives you a lot to think about as the days go on so I understand why they do it that way. Keep me posted!! My mom, my sisters, most of my friends and even a lot of my extended family have gone through the program and we can’t shut up about it. When we get together, that’s all we talk about 🙂

I’ve been loving the free DYT videos every day! So interesting!! Did you take the course? Love all your outfits!

    • Primally Inspired

Hi Dena! So cool that you are watching the free video series – that’s what first got me hooked. I watched the DYT free videos back in January 2014 and figured out I was a Type 1 after the series was over. I then completely stalked the DYT YouTube channel and got as much free info as I could. After about 3 months of mooching all the free stuff lol, I finally broke down and bought the course. I’m so glad I did! It’s so nice having all the info clearly laid out and everything I learned about style, about me, about other people has been invaluable. My year anniversary of Dressing Your Truth is this month and I’m in the process of writing a blog post all about my transformation and the many ways it’s changed my life (I can’t get over the stuff it’s changed for the positive – my marriage, my relationship with my mom, how I feel about myself, my job, my finances, my style, etc – I never in a million years would have thought a “style program” could have that kind of power). It was and still is completely life changing for me.

I was surprised by this, but I think the flowy skirt is prettier. The pencil skirt is also lovely, but I like the bigger polka dots. I would have the dress altered. Looking at how you have it pulled in, it doesn’t look like it should be too complicated. I have actually altered a bunch of my own clothes. It is surprisingly easy!

    • Primally Inspired

Thanks, Amanda! I admire people who know how to sew. My mom tried to teach me all growing up, but I was never interested in it. I regret that now. But I am way too impatient and would probably poke my eye out with the needle anyway.

  7. Avatar

Keep both skirts if you really like both, they are different enough BUT if you have to pick I think the big polka dot it the better choice.
I don’t know how it works but can’t you give the dress back and get it in a smaller size? Seems like WAY too big has happened a few times before??!!

  8. Avatar

    keep the pencil skirt!

  9. Avatar

Wow I love almost everything not so much the top you sent back but I think you should keep the skirt to use for more formal occasions but send back the dress. I don’t really think it’s worth the hassle to get it altered when you have other pieces you love just as much. 🙂

  10. Avatar

I love that dress on you. I would get it altered if the dress isn’t already outrageously expensive. Where do you get those colorful skinny belts? Such a great pop off color and I’d love to experiment with that look.

    • Primally Inspired

Hey Caroline, thanks! I don’t have any one place I get them, but Target sometimes has them (they often come in a 3 pack) and I know I’ve gotten a lot at Ross. I think this coral one came from Ross in a 3 pack – a coral, a yellow and a blue. I love belts and have a skinny belt in almost every color 🙂

  11. Avatar

I think the pencil skirt looks AMAZING on you! The other polka dot skirt is fun and looks great, but personally I think the pencil skirt is so flattering. As far as the dress goes, I probably wouldn’t spend the money to buy it and alter it, but if it makes you feel great, go for it!

Thank you sooo much for telling about dressing your truth! I’ve found I’m a type 2. I was always drawn to those types of clothing but over the years, fashion dictated me to turn away from what truly flatters me. I’m so excited to start on this new journey! I just hope stitch fix can send me the right clothes now!

    • Primally Inspired

Jennifer, I love type 2’s!! I think I’m the most drawn to type 2’s more than any other type. I’ve found that the majority of my close friends over the years are type 2’s and my husband is a type 2, too 🙂 I’m so excited that you get to fully embrace and enjoy your type 2-ness now!

      • Avatar

I just got my my next fix after discovering I’m type 2. Ugh. I was so disappointed. They got it so wrong even though I completely changed my profile and pinned a gazillion type 2 clothes to Pinterest. I emailed customer service and they are waiving the fee for my next fix so I will try again. I was wondering if any of your type 2 friends do stitch fix and how has it worked for them?

        • Primally Inspired

Ugh, Jennifer – how disappointing!! Crossing my fingers that you get a good Type 2 Fix this next time – please keep me posted. I don’t have any type 2 friends who Stitch Fix, but I’ll tell you what I did to have consistently great type 1 pieces.

I’d go back and erase all your pins that aren’t type 2. But the main thing I would do is make sure you use all the Type 2 key words in your descriptions, note to stylist and on your Pinterest board. My stylist really seemed to get it when I used all the words on the back of my color card. I told my stylist I wanted light, bright, fun, flirty, cute, styles and I ONLY wear spring colors. I told my stylist I NEVER wear black or grey so don’t even try to send it! lol. Sometimes you just have to be really direct (I know, I know, that’s hard for a type 2 😉 )

For you, I’d definitely make sure to use the key words that are on the back of your color card like romantic, flowy, drape-y, relaxed, soft. Tell them you ONLY wear muted, softened and dusty colors like greys, taupes, soft mint green, dusty purples, dusty rose, etc. You could even direct them to the DYT Type 2 Pinterest board (so many good ideas there — I feel like if they can’t get the style right from that board then they shouldn’t be working at Stitch Fix lol – it’s so clear and obvious even if someone isn’t familiar with DYT) – https://www.pinterest.com/dressyourtruth/type-2sm-soft-subtle-woman/

Hope that helps a little and keep me updated! xoxo, Kelly

    Who is your stylist?

  14. Avatar

Love the first top. Polka dot skirts; I really think the swing skirt is much more pretty and feminine and like the way you semi tucked in the blouse. I’m not a fan of tight skirts, but that’s me, it’s a personal preference for you. Keep both if you like both looks. They give different looks. As far as the dress, couldn’t they exchange it for a smaller size? Or would it not fit in other places if that was the case? If you had to take it up that much, I would think you needed a smaller size. Re: The Skies are Blue Maison blouse, I totally hear what you’re saying about color and I agree, but I think the pretty peachy pink or coral necklace you paired with it broke up the black color and complimented the color in the blouse. I think this blouse really elongates your body and makes you look very pretty paired with the black pant. So my verdict is that I LOVE this blouse because it’s so colorful. Wearing it with necklace makes THAT color closer to your face and looks great because it picks up the color in the blouse. Best of luck enjoying your new outfits!

  15. Avatar

Definitely keep the skirt; the styles are so different as well as the size of the polka dots. I’m asking for that skirt in my next Fix! The dress, I would be undecided about as well. I want to thank you for helping me discover Stitch Fix (and my Erin!) last year. I’m on my 11th or 12th fix now and love it!

  16. Avatar

I think the pencil skirt looks great on you but I love the other polka dot skirt way better. I think you should return it if it means you could keep something else you love next time. I do a lot of sewing and alterations don’t always work the way you envision them. I’d send the dress back.

  17. Avatar

I saw the dress in the email link and liked it right away. I read the comments that you already asked if it comes in a smaller size, and since it doesn’t I would consider again how much I’d wear it and if a lot, then I’d get it altered. If it’s not going to be a 10 when altered then just send it back, but request anything else in that color. It’s you.

I’d also keep the swing skirt as it is more versatile, but if you work in a classy office then keep the pencil skirt too. Great call on the other items. I’ve missed your stitch fixes the last few months. Now I know why. Watching you buy clothes must fill my own shopping needs. Can’t remember the last time I bought anything new…. Thanks!

  18. Avatar

Keep the slim Polka Dot skirt – the look you made has a totally different ‘feel’ than the flowy skirt. Also, the MAIN feature of either these two skirts is NOT the color! This month’s is slim, fitted, classic and a tiny dot. The other skirt is flowy, relaxed, romantic and a large dot. Navy is way down the list of things I notice about EITHER of these skirts. The color in both cases is irrelevant, most probably because it simply provides a NEUTRAL back drop for everything else that is going on. What you did with that blouse to make those two, totally different looks for the two different skirts was amazing! One: no nonsense, crisp, businesslike, professional; the other: soft, flirty, feminine. Well done! xoxo StitchFix Paula

  19. Avatar

Pencil skirt is cuter. I agree there is no need for both skirts.

  20. Avatar

Kelly- the emer pant you posted about a while ago. Are they petites? And what are they made of? I got a pair in one box and they were an awful “crunchy” rayon, but they were brocade so I’m hoping the solids are made of something better! I liked the fit a lot but hated that pair!!!

  21. Avatar

I like the big polka dot skirt on you. Looks better ☺️

  22. Avatar

You always have such good understanding of what looks best on you. Thank you for sharing about dressing your truth. I am going through the program now. It is amazing, not just for clothing. Thank you.

  23. Avatar

I really like the Papermoon Bart Scoop Neck Blouse, but buttons on the back? Is it difficult to get on and off by yourself?
