How To Create Your Dream Closet

Imagine having a closet that makes you so happy that you don’t want to leave.

How about having a closet where you actually have fun putting outfits together and look forward to getting dressed each day? And even better, imagine one where every single item in it empowers you, flatters you and makes you feel confident and beautiful.

Think that’s too good to be true? That’s what I used to think, too!

Today I’m sharing my secret about how made my closet my happy place, full of inspiration and joy. It’s my dream closet!

But it wasn’t always like that. Quite the opposite, actually. Before my closet was a huge source of negativity, insecurity, shame and frustration. Not to mention, it was a complete mess!

I transformed my closet into a wonderful source of affirmation and positivity, filled with pieces that flatter me, empower me and perfectly express who I am.  And I’m going to teach you how you can create your dream closet, too!

Here’s My Story….

Two years prior to this, my closet was a nightmare and had been for a long time. I had so. many. clothes. And shoes! Holy moly, did I have some shoes! My closet was unorganized, messy, and most of the items in there were unworn, with tags still attached because I never felt great in them. It was jam-packed with clothes, but I felt like I never had anything to wear. Know what I mean?

But do you want to know the worst part? Getting dressed and looking in the mirror each day was a reminder of how inadequate I felt.  As a result, my closet was a big source of frustration, shame, negativity and insecurity.

It saddens me to remember how I used to feel getting dressed each morning. I think most women feel the way I felt, at least most of the women I know.  We so easily attach our value to a number on a scale or a size on a tag, don’t we? We’re so harsh and critical with ourselves. We focus on all the things that we think are wrong with us. And we say things to ourself that we would never say to anyone we loved. I spent so many years comparing myself to those in the fashion magazines and on TV (and my barbie doll looking, voluptuous sister, as I reveal in the video below) where I certainly didn’t feel like I measured up.

It’s not like that today. My shame has been released! I love the woman I see staring back in the mirror, both inside and out. I totally appreciate my unique beauty and all my quirky traits.  And today, I look forward to spending time in my closet because my style and closet are an affirmation reminding me of all the wonderful things that make me….well, me! 🙂 And I’m going to teach you how you can do that, too!

Why is it Important to Create Your Dream Closet?

I think creating your dream closet, one that’s a positive, affirming place, is important for so many reasons:

  • Who wants to have a negative start first thing in the morning? Not me! Feeling insecure, inadequate and frustrated sets you up for a whole day of negativity and feeling badly about yourself.
  • If you don’t feel amazing yourself, how can you make anyone else feel amazing?
  • When you aren’t as critical of yourself, you aren’t as critical of others, too. It’s so cool how that works! Try it!
  • Negative thoughts and feelings don’t live in your body rent-free, I can promise you that! Negativity is a huge stress and a toxin in the body. And it gets stored, causing your body to release stress hormones. Being in a constant state of stress (and negativity) is a major contributor to fat storage (especially belly fat!), health issues and disease.

I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. Self-love, self-care, self-acceptance and positivity are so important for overall vibrant health and for just feeling good in general. I can’t say that enough!

How To Create Your Dream Closet in 4 Steps

Step 1: Discover your personal style that expresses who you are.

This first step was a total game-changer for me. I never really had a particular style or knew what looked the best on me or had full confidence in my style choices. I signed up for the free Dressing Your Truth Beauty Profiling course two years ago to help me and have been raving about Dressing Your Truth ever since.

I believe true beauty comes from the inside. The Dressing Your Truth course taught me how to connect my entire outer look (including my hair and makeup!) with my inner beauty so that I authentically express who I am. This is the course that taught me how to release all my shame, too! As a result, my closet, my style and getting dressed each day are an affirmation to love and live true to myself.

I love dressing and living my truth each day!  And because of the huge impact it made on my life and so many other women around the world, I tell everyone I know to sign up for the free beauty profiling course at Dressing Your Truth (sign up HERE – it’s free to take it!).  You’ll thank me later, I promise! 🙂

If you want to learn more about my experience with Dressing Your Truth, and what it can do for you, watch my video below (or click HERE to watch it on YouTube). I got to sit down and chat with the founder of Dressing Your Truth, Carol Tuttle while she was on tour in Baltimore, Maryland! I was so excited to meet the person who made such a big impact on my life! Here’s the video:

Step 2: Get rid of anything that doesn’t make you happy and isn’t a 10 out of 10.

Yep, donate it or get rid of it! I set aside one full day to assess every single item in my closet. If it didn’t make me really happy or I didn’t feel 100% great in it, I ditched it.

In fact, when I was done, I only had 9 pieces left in my closet. I couldn’t believe it! 9! Out of well over 100 items! I ditched more than 95% of my wardrobe and it felt down-right amazing, like a weight had been lifted. I may not have had a lot of clothes left in there, but those 9 items made me feel truly beautiful because they were an accurate representation of my inner beauty and they also flattered my outer beauty (see step 1).  A closet full of 10’s makes getting dressed frustration-free because I know every single item is perfect for me.

This step was inspired by the Konmari method that I learned from THIS book. For more organization tips that will stick, that’s the book to check out!

Side note — Having 9 pieces that brought me a lot of joy was so much better than the 100+ that made me frustrated. Don’t be scared of having a minimal closet. I surprised myself with how many great outfits I could create with those 9 pieces! It took me over 2 years to build up my wardrobe to what it is today (I’ve been using and loving Stitch Fix to build it!).

Step 3: Every time you add an item to your closet, do a quick inventory.

Just because an item is a 10 out of 10 doesn’t mean you have to keep it forever (unless you want to). Every time I add something to my closet, I do a quick inventory to see if there’s anything that I can get rid of or donate. Typically if I add 2 pieces, I’ll find 2 to donate. For me, having less stuff makes my closet so much easier to manage, and keep organized and clean.

Step 4: Decorate and personalize your closet!

If you followed step 1, you now know what items best reflect and flatter you. You’ve also gotten rid of all the shame and appreciate the amazing person you are. If you followed step 2, the only things that are left in your closet are ones that make you feel faaaaabulous. You could stop there and I guarantee that you’ll feel pretty amazing in your closet.

But I think we should have some fun! Paint the back wall in your closet a color you love or add some decorative vinyl adhesives. Frame your favorite inspirational or affirming quote reminding you of how amazing you are and hang it on the door or the wall. If you have a walk-in closet, add a rug and an overhead light that reflects your personal style.

The total decorations in my closet cost me less than $50 and they make a big impact! I printed out my two favorite inspirational, affirming quotes from artwork online and framed them in old picture frames that I already had.  My gold circle vinyl adhesives cost less than $7 from etsy and my cute pink rug and fun overhead light that I love so much were amazon bargains. You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a look you love.

Final Thoughts

I totally underestimated the negative power of having stuff around that didn’t make me really happy or wasn’t quite right for me. I can’t believe how much more light, free, joyful and beautiful I feel now. It’s awesome! When you get rid of the negative, you free up space for more positive to enter into your life — I can certainly attest to this 🙂

So are you ready to do this?! I’m so excited for you to make your dream closet a reality because I know how much of a difference it can make!

And if you’ve already done any of these tips, I’d love to hear your story and how it worked out for you. I think so many people underestimate the importance of this so your comment could inspire a powerful positive change in others! 🙂 Easy Paleo Recipes & Holistic Living

Hi, Kelly! I learned about DYT about two years ago. I just knew you were a type 1! Me too! (Although, being an introvert, I’m not “on” all the time, lol) I don’t have a piece of black clothing or shoes in my closet anymore. Thanks for the video!

    Kelly,
I LOVE this! So inspiring! I have done a good job of paring down my wardrobe. I know what clothes suit my body, and feel better having some basic pieces that I love and can accessorize. But my closet is still messy, and it also stores a lot of things other than clothes. I completely agree that it should be a happy place…I just never thought of it that way!

Thanks, Elizabeth! Over the past year, I’ve done this whole concept to my entire home, including all closets, pantry, etc. Wow, what a difference that makes!!! I am a naturally messy, disorganized person, but hate mess and disorganization (if that makes sense hahahaa!). Because of this concept, I’ve been able to keep a super organized, clean house. I can’t believe the difference it makes!

This is inspiring to finally go thru my closet and throw out or sell things that I don’t want. Doing it once I get home from work!
