5 DIY Honey Mask Recipes & the 7 day Honey Mask Challenge

You guys, my end of winter skin needed help. Dry, flaky spots. Lack of glow. You know….just blah looking skin that was in serious need of a facial (and sleep, but that’s another story).

I’ll toot my own horn for a sec – I normally have really nice, healthy, radiant skin. So this dry winter skin was new to me.  I’m sure it was mostly due to the fact that I hadn’t gotten a solid night sleep in two years and I put a lot of my skincare and wellness rituals (like THIS and THIS) on the back burner since having a baby.

I knew that I needed something to give my skin a boost.

So I started doing daily a honey mask.

Honey Mask Before and After

And those honey masks literally transformed my skin in 7 days. I went from having dry, flaky, lackluster skin to healthy, glowing, balanced skin.  I honestly couldn’t believe such an easy thing like a honey mask could make that much of a difference in such a short time. Amazing!

But then I talked to some of my naturally minded friends and learned that they had incredible results using honey for skincare, too…..

  • My friend who had really bad acne swears that honey masks cured not only her acne, but her acne scars, too. And regular honey masks keep her skin healthy and clear to this day.
  • My herbalist neighbor swears by them. In fact, she was the one who encouraged me to do them for my winter skin. She said if I don’t have time to do anything else, at least do a regular honey mask because I’ll get the most bang for my buck. She also said honey masks are the very best thing you can do for the skin and will tackle nearly every skin issue. Now I know why she likes them so much πŸ™‚
  • And get this! My esthetician friend who has access to the best, highest quality products agrees that not much can beat the results of a simple honey mask. Who knew?!

So naturally I’m telling you all about it so you can try a 7 day honey mask challenge and experience healthier, balanced and glowing skin, too!

Benefits of Honey Mask

Raw honey has powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is extremely nurturing , healing and soothing to the skin. It restores damaged skin, calms redness and inflammation, fights acne, moisturizes dry skin, balances oily skin and smooths fine lines and wrinkles.

Honey is truly a wonder remedy for all skin types and it can tackle nearly every skin issue including:

  • dry skin
  • oily skin
  • sensitive skin
  • acne & breakouts
  • acne scars
  • red, inflamed skin
  • aging skin
  • eczema/psoriasis
  • lines and wrinkles
  • textured skin

Just be sure to find raw honey. Most honey found in stores has been heat-processed and doesn’t provide the same nutritional benefits as raw honey since the heat process destroys many of the healing nutrients. You want to look for raw honey to ensure it hasn’t been pasteurized.

I recommend finding raw honey at your local farmer’s market. This raw honey from Amazon is a good one, too, if you prefer to shop online.

5 DIY Honey Mask Recipes for your skin type

Just using plain ‘ol honey for your mask is all really you need. Just slather 1 teaspoon of raw honey on your face and neck, leave on for 30 minutes, rinse off and that’s it!

But if you like being extra fancy like me, you may really enjoy the add-in’s listed below for your particular skin type. Just know they are totally not necessary to achieve good results. But I must say, they make a honey mask extra fun and and your skin will love the added blast of nutrients. You truly can’t go wrong either way!

1. Honey Mask Recipe for Acne

I highly recommend using manuka honey for your honey mask if you are dealing with acne. It’s a bit more expensive than regular honey, but if you are serious about clearing acne and gaining healthy, clear skin, manuka honey is truly the best, most effective way to go.

Manuka honey is a medicinal honey from bees who pollinate the melaleuca or tea tree plant. It’s prized for it’s anti-inflammatory, wound healing and infection fighting properties making it the perfect solution for acne prone skin and acne scars. It provides powerful nutrients for cell metabolism and tissue repair. It helps remove dead skin cells and stimulates new, healthy cells to form.

Mask ingredients for acne: 1 teaspoon manuka honey

2. Honey Mask Recipe for Dry Skin

Spirulina is an algae that boosts major beauty benefits. Not only does it contain an abundance of antioxidants and amino acids that slow down the signs of aging, but it also promotes healthy cell turnover. Say bye to those dry skin cells! Spirulina is also a wonderful source of chlorophyll. Both honey and chlorophyll help your skin retain moisture, which is the key to smooth, hydrated skin.

Mask ingredients for dry skin: 1 teaspoon honey & 1/4 teaspoon spirulina powder

3. Honey Mask Recipe for Glowing Skin

Raw cacao powder is not only delicious and nutritious to eat, but it can help make your skin glow when applied topically. It contains high levels of antioxidants that protect and repair the skin from damage and premature aging.  Increasing circulation and blood vessel strength is another benefit which stimulates new blood flow to the surface of the skin, keeping you healthy and glowing.

4. Honey Mask Recipe for Oily Skin

Skin loves, loves, loves seaweed! Kelp is seaweed that boosts so many nutrients that are truly amazing for all skin types. But one reason kelp is extra wonderful for oily skin is that it draws excess fluid and waste out of the pores to cleanse and balance the skin.

Mask ingredients for oily skin: 1 tsp honey & 1/4 teaspoon kelp powder

5. Honey Mask Recipe for Anti-Aging

In the skincare world, hibiscus is known as the natural Botox plant! It contains oligopeptides which have been shown to have dramatic wrinkle smoothing properties. Hibiscus also helps improve skin elasticity and evens out texture making it perfect for aging skin.

Mask ingredients for aging skin:  1 tsp honey & 1/4 teaspoon hibiscus powder

How to Use Honey Face Mask

Choose one of the honey mask recipes above for your skin type or you can just use honey.

1. Mix ingredients together until smooth. Add a drop or two of water if it’s not blending together well.

2. Rinse clean skin with warm water to open up pores.

3. Apply honey mask to damp face and neck. Leave on for 15-30 minutes.

4. Rinse with cool water. Notice how amazing your skin looks and feels! Incredible, right?!

How often can I do a honey mask?

I encourage you to try a 7 day daily honey mask challenge! All of the honey mask recipes above are safe and gentle enough to use daily for 7 days.  After the initial 7 day honey mask challenge, just 2-3 times a week is ideal. If you are dealing with severe acne, you may find that 4-5 times a week produces better results.

Personally, I’m doing honey masks 2-3 times a week now for maintenance. And it’s so easy that even moms with busy toddlers can make time for it πŸ™‚

If you feel inspired, go ahead and try a daily honey mask for 7 days so you can see the transformation for yourself. I’d also love to hear your results after you take the 7 day honey mask challenge! Enjoy!

Love honey masks but haven’t done one in ages. Thanks for the inspo Kelly! I’m going to do one tomorrow! I haven’t done any mix=ins…just raw honey on its own can make such a difference.

I am curious about mixing honey with dragons blood, been looking for a way to incorporate DB for facials without too much drying. Any insight?

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Oh wow, I think that would be such a great idea and an extremely healing combo to repair skin. Although I’m familiar with dragon’s blood, I’ve never worked with it before (but would love to!), so I can’t offer any tips. But I think you should go for it πŸ™‚

I was ready to order the hibiscus powder, but noticed in the comments that is has a warning about toxicity. And you put this on your face? Very disappointed.

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Hi Nan, this is not toxic as it contains only organic hibiscus and is very safe (and healing!) and used regularly for organic skin care. The person who wrote that comment on Amazon is a bit misinformed about the California prop 65 law, which requires that toxicity/California prop 65 label for many things grown in the soil (even organic soil). This label is on many natural and organic products like organic cocoa powder, teas, coffee, bentonite clay…even organic kale, etc. It’s a very confusing label and law that can frighten people unnecessarily. You can look up the California prop 65 law on natural products if you want to learn more. But food and crops cannot be grown without heavy metals because they are naturally occurring in the air and soil.

Obviously do what feels right to you, but I am extremely conscious and discerning about what I put in and on my body and I’m not concerned in the least about this wonderful organic hibiscus powder from a highly reputable company that specializes in the best organic herbs (they also test all their ingestible products for lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic, but are required to label their products with the prop 65 toxicity label because of the law. I am not affiliated with them in any way – I just personally love and use many of their products). Hope that helps!

A simple mask of honey and turmeric has been amazing for my hormonal cystic acne. I usually follow up with aztec healing clay and it’s the only thing I’ve found that can actually stop the cyst from growing into a monster.
