The Best Essential Oils for Infrared Sauna Use

Essential Oils for Infrared Sauna

As many of you know I purchased an infrared sauna about 6 months ago and have been loving and using it nearly every single day since we got it. (Read my infrared sauna story HERE…my whole family has experienced so many noticeable benefits from using it so far!)

One of the cool features we’ve been absolutely loving is adding essential oils to our sauna sessions. If you purchased a Health Mate sauna through our group buy, you had the option of getting a free aromatherapy cup for essential oils that you can put in your sauna (if you are interested in joining our group buy to get wholesale pricing on a Health Mate infrared sauna and other free goodies, click HERE for more details). You add a drop or two of your essential oil of choice to your aromatherapy cup, sit back, relax and let the healing powers of infrared  heat and essential oils work their magic on you 🙂

Essential oils take your whole sauna experience up a few notches – I feel like I’m in a fancy spa! I’ve been a fan and user of essential oils for well over a decade and can personally attest to many of their healing benefits. If you are new to essential oils, I’ll tell you my favorites for the sauna and what they’ve helped us with and how they can help you in my video below:

Best Essential Oils for Sauna:

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus essential oil is great for colds, congestion, clearing sinuses or for helping any upper respiratory ailment. One of my readers said the eucalyptus essential oil paired with her infrared sauna has kept her whole family cold-free for going on 3 years!  THIS is the kind we’ve been using. I haven’t had to use it for myself in my sauna session yet, but my husband attests to eucalyptus essential oil paired with the sauna working very well the few times he’s had a little congestion. If you have kids under age 10, I would recommend THIS kid safe version, instead.

Germ Fighter Blend

I use THIS one. This germ fighting essential oil blend protects the body against bacteria, viruses and mold.  A 1997 study at Weber State University showed the oils in this blend to be 99.96% effective against airborne bacteria. I use this blend in my sauna after I’ve been around sick people or large crowds of people.

Peppermint

Peppermint essential oil is wonderful for headaches or nausea. It’s also very helpful for pain relief and arthritis. I personally use peppermint whenever I need help concentrating. It works so well for me! There’s even been several studies showing that peppermint essential oil improves test performance and memory and I can definitely believe that because of how well it works for me. Peppermint gives me brain power! 🙂 I like THIS one. (Pregnant women and children under 6 are not advised to use peppermint essential oil)

Lavender

Lavender essential oil is a great “all purpose” essential oil.  One of my favorite essential oil reference books says, “Lavender is a universal oil that has traditionally been known to balance the body and to work wherever there is a need. If in doubt, use lavender.” (source)  It’s very soothing and provides stress and anxiety relief. It’s also been well documented to improve sleep quality and help insomnia. THIS is the one I use.

Any citrus scent

All citrus scents like lemon, orange, grapefruit are very uplifting and energizing. I find these citrus scents particularly useful for first thing in the morning, especially if you are not a morning person. I pair my citrus essential oil with my orange light in my infrared sauna (orange light therapy is documented to be an emotional stimulant and improves mood) whenever I’m in a less than stellar mood and it totally works! THIS one is my favorite citrus essential oil!

Love the video! I’ve never tried essential oils in a sauna, but completely agree with what you said about each one. I love using citrus oils in the morning. Sometimes I put a drop of grapefruit or lemon oil in the palm of my hand, and mix it with my coconut oil for when I get out of the shower. So good for those mornings when I am dragging!

My go to oils are frankincense and lavender but my favorite of all time is Neroli!!! Such a fabulous smell, great for the skin, wounds and many other things.

Like Kari I have a love for Neroli. I think it’s very under-appreciated! Thanks for this post Kelly. Good info to know:)

Thank you, for your very informative video. Đśy favorite essential oil for a sauna is lavender and peppermint . I mix five drops of my essential oil in one cup of water and pour over the hot rocks – effect is excellent.

Had no idea about infra red sauna!! Awesome information. Also, I constantly fight sinus infections, and I’ve just ordered the eucalyptus and going to try. I do use peppermint. My sister found a blend for her grandson who has autism, and it has TRULY helped him. Essential oils are awesome!! Thanks for sharing this great info, love the site.

So can I use any other container? I don’t have this one and I would like to try using oils before I buy one.

Hey – thanks for the tips.
Do I need a carrier oil for the infrared sauna ? Or do I just use it pure in the cup ?
    Thanks !

    Hi Kelly,

I’ve never seen or used an sauna cup before how does it work and does it have to be plugged in??
Could you use a diffuser in the sauna instead?

    • Kelly from Primally Inspired

Hi Jacqui, it’s just a little ceramic cup that is attached to the slats of one of the heaters in the sauna. It’s not electric. I suggest using a ceramic mug or even a rock or cotton ball. Just put a drop or 2 of oil in or on either of those things and it will work the same as the aromatherapy cup 🙂
